HAPPY EARTH DAY!

The first Earth Day on April 22, 1970, activated 20 million Americans from all walks of life and is widely credited with launching the modern environmental movement. The passage of the landmark Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, Endangered Species Act and many other groundbreaking environmental laws soon followed. Twenty years later, Earth Day went global, mobilizing 200 million people in 141 countries and lifting environmental issues onto the world stage. More than 1 billion people now participate in Earth Day activities each year, making it the largest civic observance in the world.

1.       Nail Biting

The habit: This nervous habit can chip teeth and impact your jaw. Placing your jaw for long periods of time in a protruding position can place pressure on it, which is associated with jaw dysfunction.

The solution: Bitter-tasting nail polishes, stress reduction and setting small, realistic goals can help. If certain situations are triggers, hold something to keep your fingers busy.

 

2.       Brushing Too Hard

The habit: Brushing for two minutes twice a day is one of the best habits you can get into. Just make sure you’re not trying too hard. Brushing with a hard toothbrush, or brushing too hard, can damage teeth and irritate gums.

The solution: Use a soft toothbrush with the ADA Seal of Acceptance at the proper pressure. Do not scrub, Think ‘massage’. “Save the hard toothbrush for cleaning the grout in the bathroom tile.”

Tooth brushing plays an important everyday role for personal oral hygiene and effective plaque removal. Appropriate toothbrush care and maintenance are also important considerations for sound oral hygiene. The ADA recommends that consumers replace toothbrushes approximately every 3–4 months or sooner if the bristles become frayed with use.

In recent years, scientists have studied whether toothbrushes may harbor microorganisms that could cause oral and/or systemic infection. We know that the oral cavity is home to hundreds of different types of microorganisms; therefore, it is not surprising that some of these microorganisms are transferred to a toothbrush during use. Our patients at Brace Connection hate the thought of delaying their treatments and often ask us what they can do in between their adjustment visits to help. Today, Dr. Babaeian and our team thought we would provide some tips on how you can stay on track in regards to your treatment plan time.

 

The first thing we want you to do is keep your adjustment appointments. Each visit with Dr. Babaeian is carefully planned to move your teeth a specific way in a certain time frame. It’s important to note that missing an appointment can add weeks or months to your treatment time.

 

Next, we want you to let Dr. Babaeian and our team know right away if your experience any problems with your braces or appliances. A missing wire, rubber band, broken bracket, or lost/broken Invisalign aligners can delay treatment time, so we ask that you please give us a call right away to report any issues rather than waiting until your next visit.

The community health awareness group Oral Health America has reported that 82 percent of adults are unaware of the role that infectious bacteria can play in tooth decay or cavities, and almost three out of five children aged 12 to 19 have tooth decay. Since June is National Smile Month, Dr. Babaeian and our team at Brace Connection thought we’d remind our patients about the importance of good oral hygiene visits between office visits.

To keep yours and your family’s smiles healthy and beautiful for years to come, be sure to:

·         Brush your teeth at least twice a day

·         Floss every day to clean between your teeth

·         Eat a healthy, well-balanced diet

·         Reduce your intake of sugary foods and drinks

·         Follow through with your regular general dental and orthodontic visits!

Summer is almost here, which means a season full of vacations, adventures and great memories is just around the corner for our patients at Brace Connection.

 

Everyone wants a glowing and radiant white smile when the sun comes around and we have a few reminders to keep your pearly whites healthy and beautiful over the summer! Try to stay away from drinks that will stain your teeth like coffee, soft drinks, or dark colored juices. Not only will drinks like this weaken your enamel but they will also darken that fabulous smile you’re working on! Another tip is to try and focus on brushing your teeth; everyone knows that when busy schedules start picking up, getting a good brushing session in tends to take the backseat! A good tip for keeping your mouth safe from staining and other possible pitfalls is to rinse your mouth with water after any meal if you can’t fully brush your teeth after. Your teeth, inside and out, will benefit!

On March 17, everyone has a little Irish in them. St. Patrick’s Day is a joyous celebration of Irish heritage. It’s National Children’s Dental Health Month.

Each February, The American Dental Association sponsors NCDHM to raise awareness of the importance of good oral hygiene. The campaign slogan changes from year to year, but always targets teen and preteen generations. This year’s slogan is “Defeat Monster Mouth.”

But just what is Monster Mouth, you ask?

Patients develop Monster Mouth when they fail to brush their teeth properly, floss and maintain a healthy diet. These poor habits lead to decay-causing plaque buildup – a monster the ADA refers to as Plaqster in this year’s campaign.
